When he was 10 years old he made a very brief appearance in the 1977 movie Dharam Veer where he played the younger version of his father's character.He made his debut as a leading man in Rajkumar Santoshi's Barsaat, for which he won a Filmfare Best Debut Award. The movie was a hit, and established his career in the industry. This was followed by the murder mystery Gupt: The Hidden Truth. The film was went on to become the fifth highest grossing movie of that year and was critically acclaimed. His following film Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya did not do well. In 1998, Deol starred in two films: Kareeb and Soldier. The latter was a huge hit and Deol received much acclaim for his role as a mysterious killer. In 1999, he starred with his brother Sunny Deol for the first time. The film also was Sunny's directorial debut. The film did not do well. 2000 started off with Badal which was a success at the box office, following films did not do as well. After a series of flop films, the actor gained a hit with the murder mystery, Ajnabee. In 2002, he starred in four films. Out of his four releases he had a hit with Humraaz which was commercially and critically successful. Deol received his first nomination for the Filmfare Best Actor Award. His following films failed to do well at the box office. He received much acclaim for his role in Tango Charlie (2005). He also starred in Barsaat (2005) and Dosti: Friends Forever (2005). Both the movies did average business in India but did very good business overseas. He starred in a villianous role in Shakalaka Boom Boom, which failed in India but did better overseas. His second release, Jhoom Barabar Jhoom released in June 2007. The film took in one of the biggest openings in India but failed to recover it's costs. It did much better overseas, especially in the UK where it debuted and peaked at No. 6 on the charts. His third release Apne saw him, his brother and father starring together for the first time. The film opened to good reviews and did well in India and overseas. His following release, Naqaab failed to do well. Though he received good reviews for his performance. In June 2007, at the recent IIFA Awards show, Deol broke into tears when he was called upon the podium by his father Dharmendra, after his father received the IIFA Lifetime Achievement Award. Bobby Deol is the second son of Dharmendra, a legendary Bollywood actor, and Prakash Kaur. His elder brother Sunny Deol is also a famous actor. Bobby also has two half-sisters born from his father's second wife (actress Hema Malini), whose names are Esha Deol and Ahana Deol. Actor Abhay Deol, is his cousin. Bobby Deol is married to Tanya Ahuja with whom he has two children. His eldest son's name is Aryaman, born in June 2001. His second son was born November 5, 2004 and was named Dharam after his grandfather.
